Nursery Design Safety Tips

Safety is first when you are designing a nursery room for your baby.

Here are some tips for designing a safe baby nursery room:

  • Finish designing, renovating, and painting your nursery at least eight weeks before the baby is expected to arrive. This will allow the room to air out and be free of any odors.
  • Review and inspect all nursery furniture and products before buying them; safety is essential and should be your primary concern.
  • Make sure to read the safety and hazard documentation provided by furniture manufactures.
  • Arrange the nursery furniture away from windows to avoid injuries from accidental window breakage, and to prevent your toddler from climbing on the window.

  • Install window guards to prevent a toddler from accidentally falling out of the window.
  • Consider cordless window coverings in your nursery room design to prevent injuries from window covering cords.
  • Protect your newborn by choosing Eco-friendly nontoxic nursery furniture; flooring, beddings, rugs, and paints.
  • Take your time when choosing a baby crib. Consider the safety, style, finish, shape, and the durability of the crib before buying it. The crib slats shouldn't be more than 2-3/8 inches apart so your baby can't get trapped between them.

  • Fit the crib mattress snugly into the crib without any gaps, so your baby can't slip in between the mattress and the crib side.
  • Make sure not to put pillows, large stuffed toys, or bulky comforters in the baby’s crib.
  • Do not leave plastic bags or other plastic materials in or around the crib.
  • Don’t put a baby monitor in the crib or within reach of your child.

  • Make sure hanging mobile toys are set at an appropriate height from your change table or crib, to prevent your baby from reaching them.
  • Use a safety belt on the changing table.
  • Choose a gliding rocking chair that locks and has a covered gliding mechanism; to prevent injuries to curious toddlers when they are crawling on the floor.
  • Install a smoke and carbon monoxide detector outside the nursery room.

  • Install a dimmer switch in your nursery to adjust the lighting level as needed.
  • Add night-lights to provide both safety and comfort, especially during late-night feedings.
  • Insert plug protectors in unused electrical outlets.
  • Install finger-pinch guards high on doors.
  • Install safety latches on low drawers so your child won't be able to open them and use them as stairs for climbing.

  • Avoid decorations with ribbons, long strings, or anything else that could cause a safety hazard.
  • Avoid adding anything made from glass in your nursery room design.
  • Don’t put anything heavy on decorative shelves of your nursery room. Soft decorations and stuffed animals are a safe design choice.
  • Use a cool-air humidifier instead of a vaporizer; to avoid vapor burns.
  • Keep the nursery room temperature between 16 and 20 degrees Celsius. This will help your baby to sleep safely and comfortably.

Follow these safety tips and the tips in my previous nursery design article and your nursery room will be functional, comfortable and most importantly safe for your baby.
